Hard Light Portrait Assignment

I had so much fun shooting my classmate Amanda for the hard light version of my first in-studio portrait assignment. Amanda worked perfect for this assignment since I wanted to capture an old school Hollywood type of image.  I used I hard light with the spot light directly on her face creating butterfly lighting. I still want to experiment with this type of imagery on a larger scale.
I was also able to capture a profile image of her casting a softer light on her face. I really like how she looks very siren in this image.
Than I just wanted to have a little fun and took another image from the shoot and created a more artistic approach and colored her eyes blue and made her lips red and made the image more dramatic. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I do.

Typography Class Experimental Type Project

Another class that I totally love is Typography. I get to play with type and create my own fonts and I finally get experience with InDesign which is really great. So for our first assignment we had to experiment with every day objects and create a text type and choose a quote to go with it.

So I played around with a few things and decided on a quote from Shakespeare and used grocery bags to create my font. I used one bag for each letter and hot glued each one to a piece of card stock that I later scanned and than removed the background digitally. Very time consuming to say the least. Here are some of the versions that I created.

This last one is the version that my instructor liked the most. We have some very interesting projects coming up. I will post my work as I complete the assignments.

In Studio Portraits - Studio Lighting Class

Our Second assignment for Studio Lighting class was portraits of other students in our class using soft and hard lighting. I haven't finished this assignment yet, but these are my favorite images that I was able to capture of my classmate Sandra using soft light with a white background. These also need to be black and white images but I shot in RAW and JPEG so I was able to get an image in color and black and white for every image.

Tomorrow I'm going to shoot another classmate with hard light and a black background. While I was waiting to shoot Sandra I took some behind the scenes photos of the class at work that I really loved taking.

Studio Lighting Class

I know I've been behind with my blog....again. I promise to stay more on top of this thing. So the new semester started at school and I was finally able to get the studio lighting class that I've been trying to get into for over a year and I love it. My teacher and classmates are really great and I'm learning so much.

For our first assignment we had to shoot an object that was not shiny. So I chose my teddy bear, since I had done my final art project based on this bear for art class, I figured why not let it keep inspiring my work. Oh yeah, everything has to be in black and white right now too. Here are some of my favorite images for this assignment.

We are experimenting with Hard and Soft Light. This first image was shot on a black backdrop using hard light. I think the bear looks very sad in this image so I call this one "Sad Teddy".

In this shot I used soft light on a white background and gave the teddy his baby blanket for being a good boy. Titled "Good Teddy".

I wanted to take more of a chance with this image that I call "Naughty Teddy". I used a hard light on a white background. I hung my teddy with a guitar strap and had to tie his leg with wire and attach it to a weight to keep the bear still while I shot. I later removed the wire and weight in post.
